VPLS,
MPLS VPNs, MPLS and VPNs are some of the often used interchangeably terms but
among each other due to the multitudinous words that are used by the vendors
and marketers to describe the same service with.
Multiprotocol Label Switching
(MPLS)is a standards-based technology that is used to speed up the delivery of
network packets over multiple protocols – such as Asynchronous Transport Mode (ATM),
Internet Protocol (IP),
and frame relay network protocols.
A virtual private network (VPN)
uses shared public telecom infrastructures, such as the Internet, to provide
secure access to remote offices and its users in a cheaper way other than an
owned or leased line.
VPNs are secure because they use the
tunnelling protocols and procedures such as Layer Two Tunnelling Protocol often
known as L2TP. MPLS
VPN is a VPN that is built on top of a MPLS network that is usually done from a
service provider to deliver connectivity between enterprise office locations.
The terms "MPLS IP VPN," "MPLS VPN" and "MPLS-based
VPN" can be used synonymously.
MPLS VPN is a family of methods that
is used for harnessing the power of multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) to create virtual private
networks or VPNs. MPLS VPN and
the various VPN Solutions give
network engineers the flexibility to route and transport several types of
network traffics using the technologies of a MPLS backbone.
Before
this technology was put to use, enterprises were restricted to limited wide
area network (WAN)
connectivity options. The problem with these was that they were usually very
expensive, complex and inflexible to manage for both the service providers and
the enterprises. MPLS usage began over a decade ago as a way to allow
enterprises to create end-to-end circuits across any type of transport medium
using any available WAN
technology.
MPLS VPN is A Reliable Service across Multiple Sites as the
MPLS VPN backbone always uses the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) as its
routing protocol. Almost any other routing protocol can be used to connect our
sites with the MPLS VPN backbone, but many service providers limit the choices
to static routing and BGP. Each of the edge routers peers with just one router
that is the PE-router and we get an optimum any-to-any connectivity between
your sites regardless of your network topology. Through this, MPLS VPN
makes sure that all the data packets that are being send reach the specified
service provider’s and the service receiver’s network only. While transferring
any kind of information from one site to another, the information is divided
into smaller units that are called as data packets. This is the form in which
information travels through all the networks.
MPN VPN poses as an important aspect as the
security levels maintained are often very high especially considering the fact
that information being sent in the form of data packets reaches its destination
only through the dedicated network where the information that is travelling
through multiple site links is not at risk. Thus we can easily say that MPLS
VPN is one of the well.
